Chapter Seven
Thinking was about the only thing I did for the rest of the morning. I screwed up so many drinks Aidan threatened to dock my pay if I didn’t get my head out of my ass. I knew it was an empty threat, but that didn’t make me feel any better. Luckily, being so close to Christmas, the lulls always ended before he could pry into what had me so distracted. Unfortunately, he cornered me in the back room after two of our part-timers came in.
“Things not go well when you walked your new man to work?” Aidan teased. My sarcastic retort was cut off when I stood too quickly to tell him off and clobbered my head on a shelf. Biting back his laughter, Aidan rushed to my side, checking to see if I’d managed to break skin. “Whoa, easy there. I was just giving you a hard time. Doesn’t look like you did any permanent damage. Now, you wanna talk about it or should I send you home early since you’re no use to me in this funk?”
If I told him why I was upset, he’d think I was insane. For the first time in a while, I was actually hopeful. I couldn’t explain why Kelly was different, but he’d caught me off guard and I was thinking in terms of how easy it’d be to fall for him. Even six months after Luke and I started dating, I still had a hard time seeing a future with him, with good reason as it turned out. And now, Kelly was going out of his way to make me see that this wasn’t just a holiday fling for him, that he wanted to work on building something that’d last into the new year, and I was questioning everything. But if I didn’t tell Aidan what was going on, he would follow through on his threat to send me home, and that would fuck everyone, because the new kids were decent, but they wouldn’t make it through the afternoon while Aidan ran errands.
“Kelly invited me to come home with him for Christmas,” I blurted before my brain had fully decided it’d be a good idea to talk this out with my ex. He was, after all, the man who’d already extended an invitation for me to join his family so I wouldn’t be alone.
“That’s awesome!” Aidan responded, pulling me into a tight hug. “I’m so damn happy for you. I know you didn’t want to hear it at the time, but Luke was always so wrong for you. You were like a different person when the two of you were together.”
Well, that sure as hell busted me out of my freak-out about meeting Kelly’s parents less than a week after our first official date. “And you’re just now telling me this?”
“Would you have listened before?” Aidan challenged me. He left me to think about that while he started gathering supplies to restock the front counters. “Not to mention the fact that I’m your ex.
